Sommer Moniz is one of two Deputy County Executive Officers responsible for the management of core functions of the County Executive Office. Specifically, she is responsible for county-wide Risk Management and Human Resources activities to include; risk retention, loss and prevention, workers compensation, safety compliance, occupational medicine, employee benefits, employee health and wellness, recruitment and retention, labor negotiations, employee development and training as well as regulatory compliance. In addition to program work in these areas Sommer remains focused on policy and legislative analysis affecting the various county departments supported by the executive office. Working to further the mission, vision and values of County through service delivery at all levels is always a priority.
Sommer spent seven years in retail management before moving to Merced County from the Bay Area. She began her career with Merced County in 2001 as a Family Assistance Representative at the Human Services Agency. She worked her way through the ranks and across program areas for the following twelve years. At the Human Services Agency she spent several years within Staff Development team writing curriculum and facilitating training, as well as worked on notable projects such as the Foster Parent Simulation orientation, revitalizing the Independent Learning Program and establishing the first County regional call center under the Affordable Care Act. Shortly after establishing the call center in 2013, Sommer promoted into the Human Resources Manager position and transitioned to Deputy County Executive Officer in 2019.
Sommer earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management in 2014 from the University of Phoenix and has completed several leadership trainings and certifications over the 20 years in public service including; Core Training for Social Workers from CSU Fresno in 2006, UC Davis Leadership Program in 2010, earned the CSAC Senior Executive Credential in 2014, became a California Certified Professional (CGHR-CP) in 2019 and completed the Merced County Executive Leadership Program facilitated by UC Davis also in 2019. Sommer participated in and is a proud alumnus of the Greater Merced Chamber of Commerce- Leadership Merced Program, Class 23.
Sommer and her family take full advantage of the central valley location, by traveling to the mountains, lakes and beaches when they have free weekends from travel youth sports. While not born and raised in Merced County, the friendships and connections made over the last 22 years make it home sweet home.
