Responsibilities
The duties of the County Counsel, as set forth by California statutes, include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Act as the advisory for and attend all meetings of the Board of Supervisors
- Prosecute or defend all civil actions against or on behalf of the County or its employees
- Determine the legality claims against the County, and oppose same, if deemed unjust and/or illegal
- Render legal services to the County and its officers
- Act as the attorney for the County Retirement Board
- Represent the Auditor in proceedings testing the validity of payment of funds for the Assessor, County Board of Equalization, Public Administrator, Public Conservator, Municipal and Superior Court Judges (when requested), and the County Fair Bard
- Provide legal advice to the Grand Jury, when requested
- Act as the attorney for the First 5 Merced County Children and Families Commission
- Provide legal advice upon request for other local public entities, as required by law
